How to Write a Great Anecdote

How to Write a Great Anecdote Before we start talking about how to write an anecdote, you may be wondering, What is an anecdote? Basically, its a short story about something that happened to you, someone you know, or know of. If you and your friends are chatting about a person, and you remember something they did, then tell the story as part of the conversation, you have used an anecdote. Why Use Anecdotes? Anecdotes are used to give a personal perspective, illustrate a point, make people think about something, or make them laugh. One of the places where you might find anecdote writing useful is when writing a college application essay. Perhaps something that happened in your life inspired you to study in a certain direction, and youd like to share the story to show why you are highly motivated to do well. Non-fiction, informal essays can also be livened up with anecdotes that show how the information youre sharing works in practice, and why people need to know about or think about the topic. For example, when I write about gender discrimination in the workplace, I always remember to point out that women can also be guilty of this. A female boss I worked under years ago didnt like hiring young women, Theyre just going to get married and move away or have babies, and then we have to give them maternity leave, she would say. This illustrates that women are sometimes also guilty of gender discrimination. You can also use anecdotes to amuse or entertain. Not all anecdotes are serious! If something really funny happens to you today, youll tell your friends, wont you? Thats an anecdote! Heres one of my favorites: My brother used to have an absolute obsession with answering the phone in time. He would get quite agitated if it stopped ringing before anyone picked up. One day, the phone started ringing while he was in the bathroom. He called out in a panicky voice, Ring the phone! Its answering! The phone didnt get answered. I was laughing much too hard for that! How to Write an Anecdote First, be sure the anecdote you have in mind is relevant to the context. If you are writing about dogs, for example, an anecdote about a cat is irrelevant. Ask yourself, Why do I want to use this anecdote? What point does it illustrate? Next, consider these questions: Who was involved in the story? What happened? When did it happen? Is this relevant? Where did it happen? Is this relevant? Because an anecdote is a mini-story, you structure it in the same way that you would structure a longer piece. You introduce the story, you say what happened, and you either draw a conclusion or ask a question so your reader can reach his or her own conclusion. The main point youre trying to get across is your punchline (whether its funny or serious), so save it for last. The first thing to mention is the person or group of people directly involved in the story. In my anecdote about a sexist female boss, I introduce her, but not the other people on the recruitment panel. They are not relevant to the story itself, so we leave them out. We also dont bother to mention the weather, the color of the boardroom furniture, and so on. These facts dont contribute to the story. If they did, we could add them. Always remember youre illustrating a point, and anything that doesnt form part of that point will be a distraction. Once you have introduced your players and have provided any necessary context to set the stage, you can move on to explaining what happened. Begin at the beginning and write the events chronologically. Its possible to tell your anecdote differently, but this is the easiest way to keep it coherent and easy to understand. Lastly, state your conclusion, or ask your readers to draw their own conclusion. The Differences Between Anecdotes and Stories Anecdotes are short. At most, they will consist of a paragraph, or maybe two paragraphs. Stories are longer. When we write stories, we can include a lot more detail, and we will spend more effort on drawing the reader into the scene so that they feel part of it. Can an Anecdote Be a Single Sentence? Yes, It Can My cat always cuddles me in the morning. George is so polite, he always shakes hands instead of just greeting me. When I was a student, I worked in a bookshop after classes. Admittedly, these arent great anecdotes, but they are anecdotes nonetheless. How to Write a Great Anecdote Choose a relevant event that happened to you or someone else (even a famous figure). Is your story interesting, amusing, inspiring or thought-provoking? Try to aim for at least one of these. Structure your ideas. Tell your story briefly. Draw a conclusion. Does anyone out there have an anecdote about anecdotes? Do tell!

As a result of a lack of preparation, our society is subject to a high percentage of people who lack financial success. Listen to the advice of mother’s: â€Å"If so and so jumped off a cliff would you?† Don’t do what everyone else is doing; dare to be different! Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. This does not mean that you can actually jump off of a cliff, because that would be a foolish risk, this means again to foresee the results and consequences of your actions. The successful people in society are the ones who don’t do the same thing as everyone else. For example, look at the modern art. This type of art is so profitable because it is so different from any other art created. It is also important to beware of credit. Don’t borrow excessively, because it will soon become debt, which has interest and other consequences. Instead, set a budget and stick to it firmly! Attitude is also an issue in financial success. If a person has a poor attitude, he will only get what he deserves! If the worst is expected, the worst will happen. It all comes down to the power of one’s mind. Think positively! When setting goals, focus on the positive aspects, and don’t include any negative words. Everything can be rephrased to be positive. Successful people are optimists! The Prince Essay - 1043 Words

The Prince nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Governing countries and states properly has been a difficult task from the beginning of time. In every country there will be people to who are unhappy and will disagree with your rule, causing your system to fail. So, century after century, people have tried new ways to make their politics suffice everyone’s needs. However, the art of politics is a complicated and challenging issue that will always be needed to be dealt with. There have been many ways in which people have preached their ideas on politics, but none were better than those of Niccolo Machiavelli. Born in 1469, Niccolo was adamant in creating a master plan for seizing and controlling power. He voiced these themes on what it takes to†¦show more content†¦He feels that in life no matter how much intelligence and strength you have, there is a part of life in which you have little or no control over. Virtue being a powerful quality, Machiavelli saw its potential to build a defense against fortune. However, fortune is inconsistent and variable so, you must treat it like a woman. Machiavelli states, and I quote, â€Å"fortune is woman, and it is necessary, if you wish to master her, to conquer her by force†. His point is that when you encounter fortune, you must approach it aggressively. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Machiavelli said that the ruler must be able to imitate both the lion and the fox. He is saying that the qualities of a ruler must show the bravery and strength of a lion, but also, the slyness of the fox. These characteristics are imperative for a new ruler especially. That way he can get the respect from the people right away. An example of one ruler who showed both the qualities of a lion and a fox was Septimus Serverus, a Roman emperor from 193-211 A.D. Another quality of a ruler should be that he is both loved and feared. In actuality, it is almost impossible to be both those, so it is better to be feared. My Attempt to Define Poetry Essay Example For Students

My Attempt to Define Poetry Essay It is difficult to have a single definition of poetry that fits all its varying structures, styles, and subject material. A typical dictionary might define poetry as literary composition written in verse with meaning. This simple definition only characterizes poetry on the surface, but there is so much more to poetry than just words. One can never define poetry, however one can make an attempt to describe its properties, function, and characteristics as clearly as possible. Poetry is an ancient mode of expression. Even before the development of writing, primitive societies achieved poetic interpretations of their religious, historical, and cultural awareness and handed them down to the next generation in hymns, incantations, and narrative poems. Among the many different forms of human expression, poetry has always had a distinctive place. It has always stood apart from all other forms of literature. It is the basis of every branch of literary and artistic expression. That is why we say that novels, paintings, musical compositions and films are poetic. Some modern poets claim that poetry is a way to access the individual and collective unconscious experience of life. A poem may serve a purpose, such as sharing an emotion, teaching a lesson, commenting on society, describing a mood, or conveying any other theme the author wishes. Several authors have written poems giving their own definitions of poetry to expand on that of the dictionary. Poets use language to express and communicate an idea: to make it tangible in a form that can be shared. In The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner, Randall Jarrell illustrates a very grim idea with the last line, When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose. 720. This line expresses the idea of a very apathetic end to a wasted life. If one is dealing with similar ideas and perspectives, conventional forms of language may not be sufficient to express these new ideas as emphatically. That is why poetry has evolved and taken so many different linguistic forms over the centuries. Poetry may be distinguished from prose literature in terms of form by its smaller size, by its frequent use of meter and rhyme, by its dependence on the line as a formal unit, by its heightened vocabulary, and by its freedom of syntax. There is also somewhat of a freedom of word order to present a visual image as poets such as e.e.cummings frequently do. There is also a radical distinction between the emotion felt from reading a story and the emotions stimulated by poetry; the former is derived from incident, the latter from the representation of feeling. In poetry, the source of the emotion is the exhibition of human sensibility; in prose, the source is merely a series of outward circumstances. The combination of these two is what renders an author like Shakespeare so generally engaging, each reader finding in him what is suitable to their own taste. To the many he is great as a storyteller  and to many others he is a master poet. The object of poetry is to act upon the emotions. The characteristic emotional content of poetry finds expression through a variety of techniques, from direct description to highly personalized symbolism. One of the oldest and most common of these techniques is the use of metaphor and simile to alter and expand the readers imagination through implied or clear comparison. Rainer Maria Rilke presents a good example in lines six and seven of The Panther. ?the movement of his powerful soft strides / is like a ritual dance?767 Thus, by conjuring up pictures or images and by invoking different kinds of associations, the poet elicits his own feeling and consciousness in others. Another thing that differentiates the poet from other writers is not only the focus on mode but on language itself. Thus, poetry can also be described as the art of language. .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .postImageUrl , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:visited , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:active { border:0!important; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:active , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hamlet Faking Madness EssayOne significant way that authors exhibit this art is through the use of imagery, which is basically language that triggers your mind to recall and combine images. It compels the reader to fuse together old and new memories or mental pictures of sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and sensations of touch. Imagery draws the reader into poetic experiences by touching on images the reader already knows. In the poem The Fish, Elizabeth Bishop writes, ?his brown skin hung in strips? 682 in line ten and,?until everything was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow! 684 in line 75. By using such vivid imagery, Bishop tries to draw the reader into imagining and becoming a part of the experience that is being described. In conclusion, it is my firm belief that while the meaning or definition of poetry can be discussed, debated, and analyzed, it cannot be understood in concrete terms. As individuals, we all try to find echoes and correspondences in the world beyond ourselves, seeking a sign, a direction, a purpose; poetry is a sharing, a way of helping ourselves and each other cope with an often bewildering existence. In its shared traditions we find that we are not alone in our quest to find meaning in our lives. In a world full of unknowns and secrets, poetry becomes a means of survival, a way of coping. Through poetry, one learns to deal with change, to come to terms with joy and grief, and to celebrate the wonder still to be found in the extraordinary energy of daily life. Because of this aspect alone, poetry cannot be limited by definitions. It cannot be communicated or fathomed other than by the use of poetry itself.

American History X Concepts from Chapter 8 Essay Example

American History X Concepts from Chapter 8 Essay Throughout this course we have focused on socialization and how people are shaped due to their exposure to a particular environment. When we look at instances of deviance and crimes, to understand the reason why they happen we have to look to the root of the problem, and how it came to be. American History X is a movie focusing on racism giving us a social-psychological explanation of this deviant behavior. This movie could produce a 10 page paper on deviance but I will try to concentrate on the main issues in the movie.Racism and bigotry are just a taste of the deviant behavior displayed in this movie. The setting is Venice Beach, California, in the 21st century, when the area is increasingly being taken over by minorities, and the crime rate is going up. Some white members of the community are beginning to notice this change for the worse and affiliate it because of the minority groups flooding their streets in record numbers. Gangs are forming where families visited the park, lega l citizens are beginning to lose their jobs to illegal immigrants, and fights and shootings are as common as birds. In order to protect themselves the white people form their own racist Nazi skinhead gang, called the DOC. Groups are formed for an agenda and the socialization process is an ongoing process as seen in the DOC.Cameron Alexander is the founder of many racist groups and pairs up with the main character Derek Vinyard. Together they are the leaders of the DOC and are involved with seeking out people who share their same view. These two men socialize their members with one-sided reasoning to hate anyone who is not white-protestant. In a speech Derek claims We are losing our freedom, foreigners can exploit our countrythe government policy is weakit is because of them our community is suffering. He does not mention that when the white Europeans came to this country our main goal was to live and exploit the land of our country as well. This group is involved not only with racis m and hate but with acts of violence. With the proper motivation Cameron feeds on Dereks leadership to violently protest their hate. Derek organizes the DOC who gives them all the right reasons to make a stand and fight for their freedom. They looted a local grocery store that has been taken over by foreigners employing other immigrant workers. In the process the DOC destroyed most of the store, humiliated, and physically assaulted ; battered the workers. To all the members of the DOC they were simply keeping America, as America was. They were strongly influenced and shaped on their thinking which let to their actions. They did not see their actions as crime but rather a fight for what was right in their minds. The most horrifying scene happens after Danny Vineyard (Dereks little brother) notices a black man breaking into Dereks vehicle, which was given to him by his father. Derek promptly gets out of bed and questions Danny on the situation like it is a frequent occurrence. Derek gr abs a loaded gun and sees a man on the look out near his front door, one man robbing his vehicle, and the other a getaway driver. Hate, aggression, and evil are displayed from Derek because all these men are black and their typical behavior is directly affecting him and his family. He kicks out his door, fires multiple shots killing the lookout man, wounds the man robbing his vehicle, and fires the rest of his shots at the driver as he escapes like he was an FBI agent. He walks over to the wounded black man repeatedly calling him a nigger and tells him to bite down on the curb. Derek summons all his hate and commands his foot to kick through the black mans head on the curb, immediately killing him. Officers soon arrive to the scene and pleasure fills Dereks eyes as he is arrested while Danny watches shocked as can be.Danny was not a hard-core racist as his brother but viewed his brother as a father, and role-model. As we discover later in the movie this was because their father was murdered while in the line of duty as a firefighter. Their father was murdered by a black man, which adds significance to the deeper reasoning of Dereks involvement with the DOC and why his eyes seemed to have pleasure after murdering the black men. This is when Derek began to hate blacks and minorities. Derek was sentenced to 3 years of jail for voluntary manslaughter. This light sentence could be seen as a gift to the white man for such a harsh crime. Throughout the movie we learn of certain injustices and inequalities that forgive whites, but punish blacks and minorities. While Derek is in prison Dannys vision is beginning to resemble that of his brothers. He can see why his brother has such strong hate, and the negative effect the minorities are having on their daily lives and their community. He learns this pattern of behavior from the actions his brother spoke and displayed. Three years have past and finally Derek returns from prison; a different man than when he was admitted. We are not sure why this has happened, but he is pushing himself away from his role he once occupied at home. Danny was without a role-model and being a frustrated teenager, who needs to fit into some type of social group, chose the DOC. Derek is shocked of Dannys involvement with the DOC when he returns home because he can see Danny going down his same wrong path.Being in prison actually rehabilitated Derek because he was exposed to the horrible things which he previously believed in. He developed a real impression and understanding of people in and outside the white race. He was directly exposed to minorities and other white supremacy members. He was disgusted when he saw one of the members conversing with a Spanish man only to receive drugs and sell them back to a white man. His involvement with white supremacy was strong and this would be taking a step back for the white man. Derek slowly begins to see the truth in people and doesnt just focus on skin color. The positive turning point for Derek is when he met a black man whom he had to work with every day. When they first met, Derek was hateful towards the friendly and persistent black man. As the black man became art of Dereks daily routine he began to grow on Derek. Derek played basketball with him and other black men and began to distance himself from the members of the white supremacy group. The group looked at Derek as a wannabe nigger and they threatened him that if he wants to be one, they will treat him as one. Derek had no social group and was warned by his friend that he needs to have one to survive in the joint. Derek continued to keep to himself and was raped on an ongoing basis by the white supremacy group. This act of rape could be seen as a deviance degrading Dereks manhood and a physical act of violence by the white supremacy group for affiliating himself with blacks. At this time Derek began to realize that every man is capable of good and evil; he could no longer believe that the white man was good while the black man was evil. Being in prison turned the tables on Derek as his friend nicely puts it In the joint you the nigga not me.Racism is a deviant behavior and like in the movie can lead to further deviant acts such as crime and murder. Derek learned racist behavior from his father at a young age which socialized him in that way of thinking. His racial beliefs were reinforced when his father was murdered by a black man while in the line of duty. This extreme situation combined with the worsening of his community by people of minority fueled Derek with hatred. At that time he had only seen the good in the white man and the evil in minorities. He did not have an open opinion until the tables were turned when he was in prison. People are not born racist, or biologically predisposed to murder, but rather socialized to learn these acts as appropriate. This concept can be seen in or everyday lives as well as the movie. While in prison Danny begins to buy into racism and bigotry just as Derek did. An example of this is the paper that Danny wrote about his brother before he unlearned his racist behavior:Id never seen anyone die before. The sound of that kids head splitting open in the curb went right through me. It stayed in my dreams for months, until slowly it changed it to something I couldnt recognize. The scary thing is it doesnt bother me anymore. For a long time I thought that night was proof that Derek was rightDanny strongly believed that Dereks actions were justified and he chose not to testify against his brother. Derek came back from prison a changed man and convinced his brother that good and evil do not have a skin color. Derek had to explain to Danny all that which happened in the three years in prison. After realizing what he learned was wrong the Danny eventual comes to terms with racism as well condemning it. He explains it all in a few words Hate is baggage.

world civ essays

world civ essays Enlightenment Attitudes Towards Religion Enlightenment Attitudes Towards Religion Scientific and philosophical innovations during the 18th century brought about a new breed of thinkers. Their driving forces of rational and reason shifted the religious temperament of the elite from enthusiasts to intellectuals. They argued that there was no divine standard of morality, no afterlife to divert humanity from worldly concerns (The Western Experience, pg. 657). They were radicals who sought to displace the authority of religion. Driven by reason, enlightenment thinkers naturally opposed superstition and attempted to replace religious mysticism with philosophical standards and scientific formulations. Their shift of focus highlighted reverence for the Creator and moral teachings of the Bible. By eliminating superstition they hoped to bolster the Christian religion (The Western Experience, pg. 660). Two philosophies of the new enlightened view of religion were toleration and deism, both of which sustained the faith of the educated elite. However, these philosophies displaced the authority of religion in society (The Western Experience, pg. 660). Never again would the teachings of Christianity be so readily accepted. French critic Pierre Bayle put forth the concept of religious tolerance in his Critical and Historical Dictionary. Typical of an enlightenment thinker, Bayle put the claims of religion to the test of critical reason. He concluded that many of Christianitys sacred traditions were myth and its history nothing more than fantasy and persecution. He also professed that importance lay in an individuals morality and not their creed (The Western Experience, pg. 660). Dennis Diderot echoes this sentiment in his encyclopedic definition of the term irreligious stating that morality is the universal law that the finger of God has engraved on all our hearts, and that con ...

Discussion and Analysis Consumer Buying Process The consumer buying process is described through 5 different stages namely problem recognition, information search, evaluation, purchase decision and lastly post purchase behavior. (Source: Kotler and Keller 15-25) Among the aforementioned stages, the role of marketers is crucial during the information search and evaluation phase. In these two stages, consumers generally go through a series of assessments so as to ultimately reach a decision. Kotler and Keller (15-25) in this regards have accentuated that during the evaluation phase, a consumer forms preferences among the brands. The preference of a brand is as a result of the evaluation of the information. A consumer generally starts with exploration of different products and therefore a product with high visibility gets more inclination. According to Kotler and Kel ler (17-26) a consumer is undoubtedly influenced by the â€Å"infomediaries† often regarded as the intermediaries, who publishes the evaluation of products through tabular comparison. For example, studies have shown that reviews on the websites such as blogs, tweets, bulletin boards etc., highly influence the consumer purchase decision. Once the assessments of the alternative choices are made, consumers try to formulate a belief about the alternatives that guides their intention, attitude and finally their selection among the alternatives. (Source: Weber 2- 18) There are certain other factors as well affecting the consumer buying decision, yet attitude about the products and services are dubbed as the powerful predictors of the patterns and processes of the exposure to information. Marketing Influences - Essay Example This paper will discuss Levi jeans for men based on personal influences as opposed to rivals as well as segmentation and targeting initiatives. Levi jeans for men have been around for many years and are still popular today. Various brands have come and disappeared, but the Levi jeans brand is still dominant in the market, showing that the company has considerable market power. The brand satisfies and appeals to the needs of its male clients regardless of the age brackets with diverse style senses. The name of the brand is what makes one to purchase the jeans. Since they have existed in the market for quite some time, the name has acquired the trust of consumers from different parts of the world. When one sees the name of the brand, he thinks of quality and picks the product for that reason. The brand receives this major benefit for addressing the requirements of its clients for many years (Fuller, 2011). Levi jeans are attractive since they provide various types of cuts. One has a broad range of denim cuts to select from, meaning that you can select the cut that you are most comfortable with. Although other jeans provide various cuts, they do not offer a broad selection as in the case of Levi, particularly because it is always updating, offering, and adjusting (Fuller, 2011). Levi has undertaken processes, which other brands struggle with while trying to keep their brands relevant in the marketplace. Levi jeans are popular because one is aware that they offer a broad range of relevant styles. Most jeans brands arise and disappear since they fail to get in touch with the client. As such, they cannot keep producing products that clients do not need. Levi is unlike its rivals in the marketplace. It has managed to provide great jeans and relevant styles that are appealing to clients in different parts of the world (Fairchild, 2014). The prevalence of

IN certain phases of the issue, some social events and realities in his life also contributed to his death such as his relationships with women and his religion-the Roman Catholic. The list of suspects goes on with the CIA, the Cubans, the KGB and the MAFIA, the people he emotionally hurt during his illicit sexual relationships, the officials he axed and the personnel he tried to humiliate during his term. The Warren report states, that Lee Harvey Oswald committed the murder alone out of his misguided communist ideals and desire to achieve fame in the only way that he could imagine. Oswald stated after his capture, that he is only a â€Å"patsy†, but since he was killed two days after the assassination by an infamous low level mafia gangster, nightclub owner, illegal drug and gun runner called Jack Ruby, no information could be gained from him. Whether Oswald really worked alone, as the report stated, remains a mystery, but he could also have been the gunmen of a large organization. BACKGROUND OF THE ASSASSINATION EVENT Here is the gist of the Warren Report on the actual assassination event. John F. Kennedy was in a trip to Dallas with his wife Jackie in an open limousine on November 22, 1963. The Presidential motorcade left Love Field at around 11:50am to drive through downtown Dallas. Warren Report stressed that from Love Field point, there were two occasions wherein the President personally requested to stop the limousine: first when he has to shake hands with the people who came to see him in the streets and the second one was when he has to speak to a Catholic nun he found on his way with a group of children (The Warren Report, p. 46). Actual footages and written reports literally would say that JFK, even in Dallas alone have been loved by the people. At 12:30 (EST) the limousine drove off to Elm Street through Triple Underpass. At that point, witnesses have heard several gunshots aimed at the President (p. 48). A certain Special Agent Rufus W. Youngblood confirmed that it was exactly 12:30 when he saw the sign clock situated at the top of the Texas Schoolbook Depository Building. A few seconds after that moment, gunshots were heard (ibid). Other witnesses in the motorcade also confirmed the time. Roy Kellerman who was then at the limousine signaled to the limousine driven, Special Agent Greer that it was 12:30 on his watch. Also, a police log on the radio report made by Chief of Police Curry, reporting the President was shot, confirmed 12:30pm (p. 49). The death of JFK was attributed to a certain Lee Harvey Oswald, who was then employed in the Texas Schoolbook Depository. There are theories that would point to Oswald as the lone shooter but there are also claims that it would be impossible to have just one shooter in that particular instance (Taylor, G. 2008). We will further look into that angle in the later part of this paper. Meanwhile, Taylor (2008) explained that there were a total of seven gunshots fired towards the limousine during the assassination but the third shot, based on Warren Report, was the fatal bullet that went through the head of the President. Other gunshots hit the President at the back while the others hit Governor Connally. Connally, then the Governor of Texas was with his wife in the limousine at the back where the President and his wife were seated. Both were rushed to the Parkland Memorial Hospital but the President did not survive. Soon after the body was removed from the hospital, Mrs. Kennedy opted to have the autopsy done at the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Md. , where the President once served. The autopsy report concluded that the death was caused by a â€Å"Gunshot wound, head† (Warren Report, p. 60). However, there was another gunshot wound at the President’s head located at the right part of the forehead and the one that juts out at the back of the skull (ibid). Another serious wound was found at the back of the neck, according to official report. THE SUSPECTS FOR THE ASSASSINATION The purpose of this paper is primarily to prove that JFK’s death was due to political decisions during his presidency aside from other social factors such as his personal lifestyle. Although JFK’s death was still officially unsolved, decades of investigation and speculations brought to multi-faceted cause of his death and therefore a tree of suspects whose root was not yet particularly identified. Suspects include the Mafia, the Cubans, the KGB, the CIA, his political enemies inside the US Government and even Lyndon Johnson, his then Vice-President. We will examine JFK’s connections to each of these groups and people in order for us to determine the possible motive of each should they be the real assassins. Primarily, this paper will prove that JFK had made real erratic political decisions which made these people want his death the soonest. In the years following the Warren Commission Report, its findings have been repeatedly questioned. In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations suggested that at least two gunmen were involved, and that the probable assassination conspirators were Mafia-connected. Later, two top committee staffers, G. Robert Blakey and Richard Billings, concluded that the assassination was planned and implemented by Mob bosses; that there were two shooters; and that Lee Harvey Oswald was silenced – on Mafia orders – by mobbed-up Dallas striptease club owner Jack Ruby. In 1998, a review board appointed by President Bill Clinton found nothing in secret JFK assassination records to bolster the single-bullet theory. In fact, as the Assassination Records Review Board went out of business, it complained that records of the post-mortem examination of President Kennedys body were incomplete. Such records could have cleared up mysteries about Kennedys head wound, or wounds, and helped determine whether he was shot from the front. In its final report, the review board said: There have been shortcomings that have led many to question not only the completeness of the autopsy records of President Kennedy, but the lack of a prompt and complete analysis of the records by the Warren Commission. While it collected and released thousands of previously secret government documents, the board also expressed worry that critical records may have been withheld from its scrutiny. It stressed that it was not able to secure all that was out there. In 2005, appearing at a scholarly symposium, assassination expert Dr. Jack Gordon went over doctors statements from the hospital in Dallas where Kennedy was taken after the shooting. Gordon produced quotes from nine doctors who gave the same description of a huge softball size hole in occipital-parietal region of Kennedys skull, and one nurse who said, In laymans terms, One large hole, back of his head. This contradicts the official story that the back of the head was completely intact. With all of these contradictions emerging – both during the Warren Commission hearings and in the aftermath of its final report – one has to wonder how the Warren Commission managed to arrive at the conclusions it did. A key edit in the Warren Report may have helped. The reports first draft said: A bullet had entered his back at a point slightly below the shoulder to the right of the spine. Had that stood, the trajectory would have made it impossible for the bullet that struck Kennedy to come out his neck, and then somehow critically wound Connally. Newly released documents show, however, that Warren Commission member Congressman Gerald Ford pressed the panel to change its description of the wound and place it higher in Kennedys body. Ford wanted the wording changed to: A bullet had entered the back of his neck slightly to the right of the spine. The panels final version was: A bullet had entered the base of the back of his neck slightly to the right of the spine. This crucial change only came to light in 1997, when the Assassination Record Review Board released handwritten notes made by Ford that had been kept by J. Lee Rankin, the Warren Commissions chief counsel. Fords change is even at odds with his own declaration in the Oct. 2, 1964 issue of Life: I personally believe that one of these three shots missed entirely – but which of the three may never be known. I believe that another bullet struck the president in the back and emerged from his throat (and went on to strike Connally. ) When the alteration was brought to Fords attention in 1997, he said it had nothing to do with (thwarting) a conspiracy theory and was made only in an attempt to be more precise. Assassination researcher Robert Morningstar, however, called the change the most significant lie in the whole Warren Commission report. He pointed out that if the bullet had hit Kennedy in the back, it could not have gone on to strike Connally the way the commission said it did. Morningstar contended that the effect of Fords editing suggested that a bullet hit the president in the neck – raising the wound two or three inches. Without that alteration, they could never have hoodwinked the public as to the true number of assassins. Fords alteration supports the single-bullet theory by making a specific point that the bullet entered Kennedys body at the back of his neck rather than in his uppermost back, as the commission staff originally wrote. Harold Weisberg, a longtime critic of the Warren Commissions work, said: What Ford is doing is trying to make the single bullet theory more tenable. Cyril Wecht, president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, is among many pathology experts who find this theory unacceptable: The angles at which these two men [Kennedy and Connally] were hit do not permit a straight-line trajectory (or near straight line trajectory) of commission exhibit 339 (the so-called magic bullet) to be established. Indeed, quite the opposite is true. In order to accept the single-bullet theory, it is necessary to have the bullet move at different vertical and horizontal angles, a path of flight that has never been experienced or suggested for any bullet known to mankind. A member of the House investigating committees forensic pathology panel, Wecht remains a passionate opponent of the Ford theory. He has also been a consultant on a number of other high-profile cases, including the deaths of Elvis Presley, JonBenet Ramsey, Laci Peterson and – most recently – the 20-year-old son of model Anna Nicole Smith. Former Texas First Lady Nellie Connally – who died in 2006 at the age of 87 – rediscovered her assassination diary in 1993. When Newsweek published it in 1998, the magazine said the diary reaffirms the Connallys verdict that the Warren Commission was wrong in concluding that a single bullet passed through JFKs neck and Connallys chest. Noting the commissions finding that one bullet missed the car, the magazine added: Some conspiracy theorists argue that if three (Authors note: the commission said only two bullets hit the two men) bullets hit their targets, and an additional bullet missed, then there must have been a second gunman: nobody could have fired so many rounds so quickly. After a two year probe costing taxpayers $5. 5 million, House investigators concluded in 1978 that President Kennedys murder was probably . . . the result of a conspiracy, and that there was a strong possibility of a shot from the grassy knoll, meaning that two gunmen must have fired at the president within split seconds of each other. In 2001, a peer-reviewed article in Science and Justice determined there was a 96. 3 percent chance a shot was fired from the grassy knoll to the right of the presidents limousine. The author of the new analysis, JFK assassination researcher D. B. Thomas, believes this was the shot that killed the president.

The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock - Imagery, Literary Allusion, Struc

The Love Song That was Never Sung A love song or a profession of love usually includes a culminating point where the suitor finally professes his love toward the woman. However T.S. Eliot’s â€Å"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock† is almost a guide on how to dissuade oneself from professing love to a woman. It does this by combining several different poetic methods to display a situation of desperation and trapped isolation. Basically, Alfred is clear on the fact that he wants to be a part of this woman’s –whom he loves- life, but he cannot bring himself to the complete the act, to say â€Å"I love you.† The poem itself consists of all of the reasons, going through Alfred’s head, why he should not profess his love. Imagery, literary allusion, and structure are prominent tools used by Eliot to convey the man’s feelings in the poem. Eliot’s criticism of the modern man of his time is another strong theme in this poem. A demonstration of this is clear when Eliot presents Alfred as a modern man, and then he criticizes modern men’s being with Alfred’s thoughts. The inability of taking action, or cowardice, is evidently the over arching theme in this presentation. One of the minor themes that play well into the all encompassing theme is Eliot’s interpretation of the modern man. The modern man, according to Eliot, is someone who lacks the ability to take a leap of faith or risk something no matter the importance. Prufrock is an extreme representation of the modern man and Eliot demonstrates this with these lines, â€Å"There will be time, there will be time...To wonder, ‘Do I dare?’ and ‘Do I dare?† (26, 38). Time and doubt create a barrier between Prufrock’s heart and his actions which yields him from displaying his tr... ...role of the â€Å"Fool† found in line 118. Once again, Alfred has found even more excuses for not taking any action by relating how he believes he will fail because of his lack of great status. Therefore, he never did take that leap of faith that he earnestly wanted to. No one can ever have courage without fear because then courage would not require so much heart and strength to muster. Even though Alfred possessed a certain fear, he did not have enough heart to be courageous and take a step bigger than those â€Å"measured in coffee spoons.† Therefore, with the use of, imagery, literary allusion, and structure, Eliot was able to create a poem that criticized the modern man that affected his heart. Just think--why men said to themselves--that they finally had a noble and courageous cause to fight for when The Great War began only a few years after this poem was published.

Handwriting

In my opinion, right-handed girls have more legible handwriting than left-handed girls. While doing my research I wanted to know if you were born with good handwriting, or if you learn that way, so I decided to look it up and help with more research (Handwriting skills for children, n.d.). The science behind my project is the brain and how it determines whether you are left-handed or right-handed.Judging handwriting can be helpful when you look at how they form their letters, the neatness of the writing, and how they space their letters while writing (Handwriting, July 14, 2017). Handwriting specialists look at the size of the letters, the shape, and if they slant their letters. They also look at margins, format, and line features (How an Expert Compares Handwriting, n.d.). I noticed in my project that when people where on the neat section that they wrote smaller, closser, and they also wrote darker. Also, on the regular section some people wrote bigger and more spaced out. Then on the cursive section they took a little bit longer because they did not have good education on cursive writing .The hand is made up of many bones that help make handwriting easier. There is 27 bones in just one of the human hands. There is 8 carpal bones, 5 metacarpal bones and 14 finger bones. There are held together by joints and ligaments. There are lumbricals in the hand. That includes four thin muscles that bend the metacarpophalangeal joints to extend your fingers. Did you know, that there are 17,000 touch receptors and free nerve endings in the palm of your hand. There are three bones in each of your fingers, but there are only two in your thumb. (How Does The Hand Work?, December 23, 2016) Here are a couple of facts about the brain, and which part controls handwriting. The cerebrum is the part of the brain that controls handwriting, it also controls speech, emotions, vision, and touch. Did you know, the right hemisphere of the brain is dominant to the left side of the body and the left hemisphere of the brain is dominant to the right side of the body? Which means when left-handed people write it is the right side of the brain, and vise versa for right-handed people. There is a chance of about 26% that a child will become left-handed if both parents are? 8.6% of women are left-handed in the world (Handedness and the Brain, n.d.). In conclusion, the science behind my project is how the brain controls handwriting. 90% of the world is right handed and only 10% of the world is left-handed. Hand specialist look at many things while looking at people's writing. Did you know, they even made a day for left-handed people? Doing this project has taught me a lot about left-handed supplies and other interesting things. In my project, I can conclude that right-handed girls have better handwriting than left-handed girls.

The Bhagavad Gita Essay - 861 Words

The Bhagavad Gita as translated by Juan Mascaro is a poem based on ancient Sanskrit literature contained in eighteen chapters. The period of time, around which it was written, although it is merely an educated guess, was approximately 500 BCE. â€Å"†¦there are a few archaic words and expressions, some of the greatest scholars have considered it pre-Buddhistic, i.e. about 500 BC,† (Bhagavad Gita, xxiv). This quote is found in the introduction to the book and further explains that the exact time it was written is undeterminable. Although the words and dialogue are very different than that of the English language to which most are accustomed to, the spiritual messages throughout the entire book are very clear and meaningful. There are two main†¦show more content†¦The contents of the eighteen chapters are very basically the acquisition of the correct knowledge to achieve such a conclusion. The piece of spiritual knowledge that carries the most weight throughout the Bhagavad Gita is the responsibility of the individual. Before one can accept the responsibility of one’s self, one must differentiate between the temporary material body and the eternal spirit soul. Everyone must engage in some sort of activity in this material world, however one’s own actions can do one of two things. They may bind you to this material world, or liberate one from it. By living life selflessly and placing full faith and trust in the Supreme Truth, one will be lead to that higher path. The idea of self-responsibility is not merely being accountable for your faults, but living according to the wants and needs of a higher power. Simply, the responsibility of the individual is to submit fully to the Supreme truth, and live one’s life righteously in the quest for that truth. In trying to explain this Supreme Truth as well as other aspects of life, Krishna appeals to Arjuna in several arguments. Just when Arjuna believes he is headed for the great battle, he falls to his knees in despair, â€Å"Fall not into degrading weakness, for this becomes a man who is not a man.
